LAKEVIEW | Live Like a Local
I stepped outside to discover the crisp morning air that only meant one thing: autumn is quickly approaching. There are many things I enjoy about the season but I’m NOT READY! I feel like I’m scrambling to make the most out of every moment. Which might be how you feel if you’re staying in Chicago for a short time and want to know how to live like a local for the long weekend you’ll be here. I'm giving you a run-down of my favorite Lakeview spots for next time you're in the 'hood and want to try something new!
When I first stepped foot in Lakeview, I had lived in Chicago for a week and decided to try out their Arts Festival in September. I was inspired by the talented local art and community that rose up to support them. The vintage charm of the neighborhood and very communal feel made me decide this was my goal neighborhood. A few years later I finally made my way east. I love living so close to the lake and the never-ending entertainment present in the community!
Eats
*coffee and cafes*
Come for the atmosphere, stay for the strong drinks. This restaurant has Instagram potential written all over it with their charming backstory of brother-owners and chic design. I'm going to be honest, I'm not impressed with their food nor can I recommend the smoothie or various pastries I've tried here. It is a great quiet spot to read a book and can be very calming so maybe grab a cocktail and relax instead of grabbing a bite to eat.
Just a few blocks west of the Belmont Redline, this coffee bar serves my favorite brew, Dark Matter, and has a cute little outdoor patio. Grab yourself a little treat with the Do-Rite Donuts they provide.
This cafe is a little over a year old and it is one of my favorite places to hideaway. With great games and food made from the local kitchen just south on Broadway, there are many reasons to visit. It has to be the warm welcome you receive as you walk in the door and order that keeps you coming back to this neighborhood gem.
I stumbled on this place because the Southport Corridor is easily my favorite place to shop and eat in Lakeview. It's quiet, sophisticated, and without any of the pretension of Lincoln Park or noise from the Wrigley crowd. I love crisp fall mornings on their outdoor patio and I can never turn down their cupcake pancakes. That's right - cupcake batter in pancake form - with sprinkles on top! I'm living my childhood dream!
Just South East of Wrigley, you'll find this quirky cafe that's open late. The first time I stepped in I could picture the entire Friend's cast grabbing a bite here and sipping on large cups of coffee. It has a very laid back vibe and presents hearty meals for all guests. Also a great first date spot if you're looking for a comfortable place to get to know someone better.
Entertainment
The Chicago classic seems to be the arcade bars. We have four all within 6 square miles of one another. Emporium is my favorite but if you're in the area, Replay has the same vibe and just the right amount of fun!
*movies*
There is something so nostalgic about a vintage theater that plays indie or old films. I just recently saw my first documentary there and the community that sat in the small theater felt like a large family. Everyone had invested in this moment and without an empty seat in the room, we truly experienced a new perspective together. If you're looking for comfy seats or some extra space go somewhere else, but if you're looking for a place to see a movie solo or to go back in time - this place is perfect.
*shopping*
Ever since my first paycheck, I have been on the hunt for whole in the wall shops that really put a personalized stamp on their products and community. I bought my first air plant and marble jewelry set here and so many trinkets for gifts as friends (and a few for myself.) I love walking into their store and finding the treasures they so carefully cultivate. Be sure to check them out!
If you're a compulsive party planner or avid decorator like me, you will fall in love with Foursided! They had just what I needed for the flower party I threw in April and I had to hold myself back from buying all the other things! If you have any type of gift to buy or looking to treat yourself to something cute and useful, check this place out before going anywhere else!
