C H R I S T M A S in the city
Every holiday season I get messages from people visiting Chicago. “Where’s the best place..”, “How long does such-and-such run for?” “What’s parking like?” (That one I actually don’t know how to answer, ha!) I remember when I still lived in Wisconsin, I wanted every moment in the city to be filled with all it had to offer. Skyline view, twinkling lights, and lots of coffee + food.
So here you have it! My Christmas in Chicago List. Specifically for those weekend out-of-towners that want to soak up every minute of the magic.
Morning: My go-to bakery is Alliance Bakery on Division in Wicker Park. You can’t go wrong with an almond croissant and a Red-eye (you’re gonna need the energy!) Their cinnamon buns are also divine. They have the cutest, quietest lounge next door that will be a slow start to your morning. Best part, it’s near public transit for your next destination. If you’re up for something savory and have a car, check out Werewolf Coffee Bar on Elston, just outside of Wicker. Their ham and cheese croissant will not let you down! Be sure to pick up a cup of Dark Matter or Stumptown brewed coffee, the smoothest coffee you’ve tasted in a while, I promise.
Stay Warm: The line is sure to be long but the experience is worth the wait. Wear lots of layers when you visit Maggie Daley Park’s skating ribbon. It is such a blast, with Christmas music blaring and the air filled with the buzz of holiday cheer. You can enjoy the cheer as you skate along the skyline. (No worries if you’re a newbie, there’s lots of off ramps and fences along the path if you need a little extra help!
Fuel up: If you’re looking for yummy food within your budget and a gorgeous atmosphere, look no further. The Drawing Room and Game Room at Chicago Athletic Association will not let you down. I’m often found here on Sunday afternoons so maybe we’ll bump into each other! Their burgers, fries, pork tacos, and the rest of their selection will leave you full and satisfied!
Soak up the spirit: Just across the street Millenium Park has a small ice rink alongside the Chicago Christmas tree, all lit with lights. Follow the steps east and there is a balcony perfect for a photo opp. Walk a few blocks south to the Art Institute and see the famous lion statues, framed with wreaths. Just as the sun begins to set, make your way to your next destination..
ZOO LIGHTS: A family favorite, this experience is best done with a cup of hot cocoa or cider in hand as you walk through the zoo lit with lights. It’s full of photo opportunities and light displays timed to your favorite Christmas tunes. Just a block north splurge on the best steak and dessert you’ve had in a LONG time.
Mon Ami Gabi: This French bistro is superb in service, class, and presentation. My personal favorite is their Bordelaise prime steak frite. Oh my, it’s a melt in your mouth wonder. This isn’t very lady-like but I wish I could like the plate every time – it’s that good. Pictured is my friend’s reaction to the “profiteroles”. It richly exceeded our expectations.
ChristkindlMarket: You’re going to need to walk off that wonderful meal so check out the German market that is an annual Chicago tradition in the Daley plaza. Off of Washington st. in the heart of downtown, it’s the perfect way to end the evening. After working the market for a season a few years back I can tell you: the cheese stand and the nut stand is where it’s at! Snack on the candied pecans, pick up a spiced beverage, and wonder through the stands. (But save the cheese for later, YUM!)
I would love to hear your favorite parts to explore in Chicago that I can add to this list. Chicago is beautiful no matter what season but it’s always a trick to find warm activities that spread the Christmas cheer. Next time I’ll be posting some family-friendly indoor activities in a more centralized location.
Cheers from Chicago,
Ashley
